Bloomquist Bags Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Bluegrass Classic at Bluegrass

Bardstown, KY-August 27- Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN would become the 12th different Late Model feature winner at Bluegrass Speedway in 2005 by picking up the 5th Annual Bluegrass Classic-A Tribute to David Speer for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on Saturday night at Bluegrass Speedway. Other feature winners were Danny Blackwell of Taylorsville, KY in Sportsman and Avral Thompson of Loretto, KY in Street Stocks.

With the cameras of ESPN2 taping all the action, the 60 lap/$10,000 to win Late Model main event took the green flag with Brian Birkhofer, Donnie Moran, and Jeff Taylor taking the field three deep into turn one, with Taylor coming away with the race lead, followed by Moran, Birkhofer, Darren Miller, and Steve Francis. Caution would wave on lap 2 as Matt Miller spun after contact from Brad Neat, with Neat being forced to restart at the rear of the pack. The Delaware double-file restart saw Birkhofer challenge Moran for second, with Birkhofer taking the spot on lap 4, with Darren Miller working past Moran for third on lap 6. As the front five settled into place, Don O’Neal, Matt Miller, and John Gill were at battle for sixth, with 15th starting Scott Bloomquist making his way into the top ten on lap 10. Taylor would continue hold the point, setting a torrid pace and pulling out to almost a half-straightaway lead by lap 15. Taylor would start working traffic on lap 16 and would find himself racing three-wide at times with slower traffic, allowing Birkhofer and Miller to close. Meanwhile, O’Neal and Gill would duke it out for the sixth spot, racing side by side as the event neared the midpoint. A spin by Jimmy Owens on lap 27 would spell disaster for race leader Taylor and he would clip the spun mount of Owens in turn four, causing suspension damage to the right front of Taylor’s entry and ending his night. This turn of events put Birkhofer at the point and the double-file restart would see the first two double file rows go four-wide heading toward turn one, with Moran in pursuit of Birkhofer, while O’Neal would go to third, Bloomquist would go to fourth, while Francis would stay fifth. Darren Miller would slow after the restart and roll to a stop on lap 28 in turn four with a flat right front tire. The next restart would see Moran move to the lead past Birkhofer on lap 30, Bloomquist nab third from O’Neal, while Gill grabbed fifth from Francis, all on the same circuit. Bloomquist would then set his sights on Moran for the lead, while Gill and O’Neal battled for fourth, with Gill taking the position on lap 35. Lap 37 would see Bloomquist roll alongside of Moran, with the duo racing side by side for the lead before Bloomquist would drive by Moran in turn two on lap 39. Birkhofer would drive up on Moran and take the runner-up spot two tours later. As Moran began fading a bit, Gill and O’Neal rolled up to him and set up a three-wide three way dance for the third spot on lap 47, with Gill taking third and bringing O’Neal to fourth on lap 48, while Francis would go to fifth on lap 50. The final caution waved with 53 laps completed when Moran slowed in turn three with a flat right rear tire. The final seven laps would see 16th starting Earl Pearson, Jr. rocket to fourth by O’Neal on lap 55, while Gill would grab second from Birkhofer with two laps remaining. Bloomquist would see the checkered flag first aboard his Miller Brothers Coal/ Perry County Tire/Hoosier Racing Tires #0 Bloomquist Race Cars mount. Bloomquist would be presented his trophy by the entire David Speer family, with Bloomquist giving the trophy to Mr. Speer’s widow, Brenda Speer. Gill would take second, with Pearson, Jr. sneaking by Birkhofer on the final lap for fourth, while O’Neal would complete the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Francis, Darren Miller, Matt Miller, Greg Johnson, and Mike Marlar. Fifty-three entries saw Earl Pearson, Jr. set the Ovalcraft Aluminum Racing Designs fast time at 15.828 seconds, with VP Race Fuels Makin’ Power heat wins going to Steve Francis, Johnny Wheeler, Jeff Taylor, Brian Birkhofer, and Donnie Moran. The Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno 1st B-Main was scored by Earl Peason, Jr., while Bryan Barber won the PPM Racing Products 2nd B-main. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series provisionals went to Freddy Smith and Tim Dohm, while Joey Daniel and Timmy Yeager were Bluegrass Speedway provisional starters.

Danny Blackwell picked up his ninth Sportsman feature win of the season after a rocky start that would eliminate a couple of entries. The win for Blackwell came in the Sherry Blackwell owned Noel Auto Sales/Lotsa Cars and Trucks/D and D Towing/Powerhouse Race Cars #B1 Chevy Monte Carlo. Pat Hagan would get runner-up honors in the 15 lap main event, while Timmy Glazer, Todd Coffman, and Bobby Lawson finished third through fifth. Completing the top ten were Jimmy Bryan, Barry Chesser, Sam Huffer, Johnny Cecil, and Steve Rector. Blackwell was also fast qualifier and won the dash, while Roger Cecil won the heat.

Avral Thompson would score his fourth Street Stock feature win of the season by putting his Cozy Corner/Backyard Bounce/Teamsters Local 89/Nally’s Exhaust/ Maywood Chevron/Bluegrass Siding #44 Chevy Caprice in victory lane. Daroyl Samples would finish a close second, with Shane Litton, Bo Wallace, and Casey Bryan completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Willie Edelen, Doug Estep, Cam Taylor, Troy Moore, and Brad Mattingly. Heat wins went to Thompson and Samples.
